Then we started analysing the design, with comments like 'what a lot of excess carbon fibre, fixtures and fittings!' Rodney is sure he could loose half of it, in particular, make the suspension in a single sprung piece, use a little bit of core on the motor mounts and rings.... you get the picture. Although he did have special commendation for the controls/software engineers.
The combination of clever engineering design and good use of materials and processes makes it one of our most fun Best Engineering Design contenders.
On our Engineers and designers courses we take great pleasure at getting delegates to 'think outside the box'. Regardless of whether you work in Formula one or aerospace, transport, orthotics, construction or civil engineering, great composite design involves using the materials to their best advantage. If you have any contenders email us & let us know.
It is definitely an interesting time to be involved in any sort of engineering. I'm just hoping space travel will become an every day, affordable, occurrence in my lifetime. Maybe it's little developments like this which bring us a tiny bit closer?
