Hydroscopic verses hydroscopic moisture in composites materials

Following the last post about Composite terminology here's a pop quiz which we had in the office regarding an email about hydroscopic verses hygroscopic.

If you don't know what it means:
hygroscopic =Readily absorbing moisture, as from the atmosphere.
1.Of a substance: tending to absorb moisture from the air L18

One of the most commonly asked questions
I would like to have a career in Composites, what are the job prospects like?
We're always asked this one & we keep hearing about the shortage of skilled engineers in the UK, so what do we think? The field of advanced composites has been growing continually worldwide. During the recent recession, some sectors have declined, but as a whole the composites industry has continued to expand. Anyone who can demonstrate a good grasp of composites can have good career prospects for years to come.

Composite terminology

There are so many composite terms that we use regularly, but sometimes we come across terms which confuse us or we question here at DMC (or we are emailed about!)
So we thought we'd share some with you.

Firstly one of the easiest ways to wind up anyone from a textile background, now working in composites, is to talk about weave structures and crimping. Especially balanced and un-balanced twills, satins and sateens.

Could we all please agree that weave structures were named before they were used for composites and the textile people are right. (Yes I'm a textile person & highly biased, but that's the beauty of being the blog author this week, engineers turn next).
