Welcome to dark matter composites blog

Composites careers and training

One of the most commonly asked questions
I would like to have a career in Composites, what are the job prospects like?
We're always asked this one & we keep hearing about the shortage of skilled engineers in the UK, so what do we think? The field of advanced composites has been growing continually worldwide.  During the recent recession, some sectors have declined, but as a whole the composites industry has continued to expand.  Anyone who can demonstrate a good grasp of composites can have good career prospects for years to come.

career in composites
If you’re unsure if a career in composites is for you, or which area to look at, think about what you enjoy doing and what you are good at.  Read more for examples and suggestions:

Are you patient and methodical? Do you have good craft skills? Do you enjoy solving technical problems?  If so, you might like to consider working with composite materials, as these are the traits companies need.  Whereas, if you hate wallpapering for instance, then conforming flat materials to shape with resins is not likely to be up your street!

If you are less hands on and more engineering inclined, then good composites engineers tend to be a ‘jack  of all trades and master of none’.  Typically good composite engineers tend to have process, production, design, materials and engineering knowledge all rolled into one.  In reality, the options available when working with composite materials is vast, you need to be able to choose your options wisely!

Can you help me get a career in composites?   There are agencies and websites that specialise in composites jobs and they can advise you on requirements and necessary experience.  Some can even place trainees who have been on our courses, as the course certificate can give an indication of someone’s potential.

If I attend a course, will I get a job?   By attending one of our courses, you will have the opportunity to learn about composites in a highly structured manner.  We cannot make anyone skilled within a week (be a little wary of anyone who promises they can) but assessments are included in our courses.  The results of these show the achievement of an individual in a controlled environment, and give employers a guide to your potential.  Combined with the fact that you have invested your own time and money in a course, this will stand you out from the crowd.
