Thermoplastic Composites 2015

14/10/2015

I attended the 2015 Thermoplastic Composites conference organised by Composites UK and the British Plastics Federation last week and left thinking 'what a constructive day', (something you don't always get).

The presentations were very complimentary, technical, informative and openly honest with regards to thermoplastic composites.  There were some interesting discussions:

  • we found a potential material supplier for a prototype contract
  • discussed on-site adhesive bonding in relation to a consultancy contract

Bottom line is - developments in thermoplastic composite materials will be 'product led'.  If you think your application would benefit from a thermoplastic composite, don't go looking for an off the shelf material, tell suppliers what you need and the required performance criteria.  You may be surprised at the outcome.

Totally contradictory to the above www.cecence.com have a re-formable thermoplastic carbon fibre material and are looking for companies that want to use it.  Best to give them a call, it looks promising for applications in motorsport and orthotics and probably lots more to come.
